I’ve had so much fun planning crafts this season for the little ones. I led Lucy’s Girl Scout troop this week at their holiday party and then I’m planning for our Little Lovelies Camp Christmas event for next weekend. I thought I’d share the snow globe craft we made at the Girl Scout party (the above photo is Lucy’s she made), as it was a hit with the girls as well as the leaders. I will say, this was a little more challenging on the adult’s part…but we managed to do this with 21 girls. So if we successfully made it through that, anyone can do this! I like the idea of this craft because everyone got to pick their own stuff so they were all just a little bit different.
When I’m planning crafts for kids, I have 2 criteria:
1. Must be inexpensive.
2. Must be something I’m willing to keep for years and display publicly. I feel like a lot of kids crafts are either tacky or just get thrown away at the end of Christmas. I want something that they feel like they made and is special and that I will want to keep.
Last year I tried the snow globes with water and all that good stuff, and while it was fun, it just got a little complicated. And far too complicated to do with a large group of kids. So this is a little different version of the snow globe. Here are my step by step instructions:
Step 1: Hit up Hobby Lobby and grab up all these supplies. Most of this stuff was 50% off in the Christmas craft section and in the miniature ornament section. Just get what you like, but the trees are a good filler.
Supplies you will need: Glue gun, white glitter, a sheet of Christmas scrapbook paper, ribbon or pipe cleaner, plastic wine glasses (these are from the Dollar tree, 4 for $1).
Supplies you don’t have to have, but are nice extras: colored glitter, ribbon, snowflakes or snowballs.
Step 3: Carefully separate your wine glass pieces. Let the kiddos pick out around 3 tiny items to put into their globe. Then you carefully glue the items onto one of the wine glass bottom pieces. Anything that’s small or short you will want to glue to the middle piece sticking up so it will stick up out of the snow, and so it will cover that middle part up anyway. While that is drying…
Step 4: Take one of the other wine glass bottoms and put a glass together. This allows for the kiddos to fill up a “globe” with glitter without accidentally dumping it out everywhere. Let them put whatever glitter they want and snowballs or whatever you have. Don’t fill it too full though (you’ll figure it out after you do the first one).
Step 5: Take their little scene you glued to the bottom piece and turn it upside down, place in the wine glass, and you glue it around the edges. It does not matter how terrible the glue job looks here, it will be covered up in the end.
Step 6: Take your Christmas scrapbook paper and trace a lid or something onto it and cut it out. I happen to have a 3 inch punch I use, so that’s a good size. Just make sure it sticks out a little around the bottom. Dump some of your white glitter into a bowl. Then take your paper circle and glue gun and glue the circle to the bottom. Then quickly let the kids dip it and spin it around in the bowl of white glitter. Take it out and it looks like snow! And all your ugly hot glue job is covered up! Yay!
Step 7: If you want to hang it up, twist a pipe cleaner around the top, then take it off, add a little hot glue and stick it back on. Then add a pretty little bow and BOOM…you have a snow globe ornament. They can take it off and shake it around and then hang it on the tree.
Well there you have it! Hope this you all can make your very own globes with your little ones. And please share any pics on our Facebook page!
(And this is Olive’s!)
Enjoy!
